Designing Personal Space
When we bought our home, I knew I wanted our space to look and feel a certain way.
Your home, whether you rent or you own, is a visual representation of you: your likes, dislikes, if the space is cluttered with memorabilia or more minimalist, or what the paint colors are and if their muted/natural or more bold and vibrant.
It’s all a complete description of you.
Granted, part of the overall design does come from the style of the space too. Our house is a little mid-century cottage so it already exudes character with the original hardwood floors and clean lines of the cased openings, coupled with charm of the massive fireplace wall we painted.
When we moved in, the house was a clear rainbow of colors, from the yellow front door that would hurt the sun’s feelings, to the pepto bismol pink and mint/sea foam green bedrooms, the deep periwinkle kitchen, to the main living areas in a dreary grey tone completely offensive against the wood floors.
Everything was then painted a bright, clean white as a neutral base for the deep deep green accent walls and earthy tones added by furniture and decor.
Now the house feels calm, peaceful and so much lighter than it used to, exactly how I’ve always wanted “my“ space to feel.
An a FYI, I am FAR from a professional designer, I simply have learned over the years what I truly enjoy having in my space and what things I’ve been willing to let go of.
Design Tips:
Add plants!! The greenery alone does wonders for warming up the room and makes it feel homier. I have live plants but a well designed fake one can be just as effective.
When you can, opt for vintage or real wood furniture. The quality makes such a difference not only for looks, but they also last so much longer than the cheap stuff. I know from experience!
When choosing colors, try a simple palette overall as too many can be overbearing coupled with everything else in the house. If you really want a bold look though, then go for it!
